5 Tips for What to Write in a Valentine’s Day Card

Are you wondering what to write in a Valentine’s Day card? You’re not alone. For many, booking last-minute Valentine’s day dinner reservations at the hottest spot in town can feel like an easier feat than articulating how you feel in a card.

So I’m here to help you. As a professional wedding vow writer, I’m well-versed in writing from the heart.

Here are my five tips for what to write in a Valentine’s Day card. Follow these tips and your writer’s block will transform into romantic prose.

Tip #1: Address the Card Using Their Nickname

Start writing your Valentine’s Day card by addressing your partner. Do you have a nickname for them? Great! This is the time to use it so that you can make the card more personal.

Plus, since you won’t be reading this publically, you can use that pet name you reserve for when you’re alone…Boobear.

Tip #2: Consider How Their Love Makes You Feel

How do you feel when you’re with them? How do they make you feel special and loved? How does this relationship feel different than any other relationship you’ve had?

Brainstorm notes to each of these writing prompt. This will provide you with a few sweet sentences that you can write in your Valentine’s Day card.

Tip #3: Detail Why They Make You a Better Person

Valentine’s Day is all about love, and love transforms us. How has their love changed you? In what ways do they inspire you or motivate you?

Get specific. Love is, after all, in the details.

Tip #4: Note Why Valentine’s Day is Special Because of Them

Why are you happy to spend this day with them? What are you most looking forward to? Is it the romantic dinner or the sweet chocolates? Perhaps it’s simply being able to binge-watch your favorite Netflix show together.

Write the romantic details of the upcoming date that you believe are only special because you will share the experience with your love.

Tip #5: Close on a Loving Note

You can finish writing your Valentine’s Day card by including a love note. A simple, I love you, is a nice closing.

However, if you two have a cute way of expressing your love, do that.

For example, I know one couple who says, “to the moon and back” as their way of saying, “I love you.”

Beatrix, my honey love,

I have never felt so cared for and loved as I do when I’m around you. Your love has given me new hope for what my life can be.

With you by my side, I feel like no dream is unobtainable. I’m living the best life I could have ever imagined for myself because of you.

Looking forward to dinner tonight at our favorite spot. :)

Yours for today and forever,

Jennifer

Babe,

You are the kindest, most thoughtful, and the funniest man I’ve ever known. I don’t need it to be Valentine’s Day to feel how much you love me. You do that for me every day.

You inspire me to love deeply and laugh loudly and I can’t wait to laugh alongside you tonight as we watch our favorite Will Ferrell movies.

I love you,

Kendra

My love,

I’ve never felt a love like I’ve experienced with you. We are so meant to be from how your hand slips easily into mine to how my shoulder is cushioned perfectly for your head.

I love how you make me want to celebrate days like today.

I love you to the moon and back,

Theo

My sweets,

I don’t need it to be Valentine’s Day to tell you how much I love you but it feels like a good excuse. You are my everything and I couldn’t imagine doing one day with you.

I love our crazy life together and I love you.

XOXO,

Tamara

What do you write in a Valentine’s Day card if your relationship is new?

If you’ve just begun dating or haven’t said “I love you” yet, figuring out what to write in a Valentine’s Day card can be extra tricky.

You don’t have to be overly romantic and can keep it short, but still, make it personal.

Detail why you enjoy spending time together and what you admire about them.

Don’t worry about how to end the card. No heart or XOXO is needed. Just note that you’re happy to be sharing this day together.

Here’s an example for what to write in a Valentine’s Day card when you’re relationship is new:

Leah,

I have really enjoyed this time we’ve spent together these past two months. Being with you always makes me happy from how you make me laugh with your James Bond impression to how you bring out the chef in me through your passion for food.

You are such an amazing woman.

I’m so happy to be spending this Valentine’s Day with you,

Justin
